Kurdistan (Iraq) – Early Field Experience

During an early stage of his career, Professor Patrick Treacy travelled to Kurdish regions of Iraq, including Halabja, at a time of significant political tension in the aftermath of conflict. The region remained heavily controlled, with restricted access for foreign nationals.

While there, he was detained and questioned by Iraqi military forces due to his presence in a sensitive area without formal clearance. The detention was temporary, but reflected the realities of working in politically volatile environments at that time.

The visit provided direct exposure to communities affected by conflict, including the long-term consequences of war and displacement. This experience played a formative role in shaping his later commitment to humanitarian initiatives and sustained engagement in underserved regions worldwide.
